“Monsieur de Pourceaugnac” by Molière on the terrace of Château de Flaugergues with the troupe from l’Illustre Théâtre de Pézenas. At the start of summer, l’Illustre Théâtre de Pézenas presents Molière’s “Monsieur de Pourceaugnac” on the terrace of Château de Flaugergues. A lively comedy, full of colorful characters! The story: two young lovers, Eraste and Julie, get rid of an unwanted suitor, Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, through the tricks of a schemer, Sbrigani, and his accomplice, Nérine. In 1705, Jean-Léonor Le Gallois de Grimarest, Molière’s first biographer, wrote about the origins of the character Pourceaugnac: “It is said that Pourceaugnac was created after a gentleman from Limousin who, one day during a performance, in a quarrel he had on stage with the actors, displayed some of the ridiculousness with which he was laden. He did not carry it far; Molière, to avenge himself on this country gentleman, made of it an entertainment to the taste of the People, who greatly enjoyed this play, which was performed at Chambord for the entertainment of Louis XIV in September 1669, and in Paris one month later.” The work was a great success and was performed forty-nine times during Molière’s lifetime.
