As part of the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier, Schubert died in 1828, at the age of thirty-one, and it seems he gave the best of himself in the final months of his life. Indeed, it was in 1827 that the vast cycle of twenty-four lieder entitled The Winter Journey was composed, both a self-portrait of the musician in search of himself and a dramatic plunge through an intimate genre. Here Schubert expands the miniature and turns each lied into an increasingly poignant stage: solitude, rebellion, sarcasm, dejection, every mood passes through these twenty-four markers of a soul in distress, encountering a crow, a hurdy-gurdy player, a linden tree, a young woman - and, at the end, something that is death and transfiguration. The Winter Journey is an ideal journey for a warm, lyrical baritone voice: with his double and artistic partner Mikhaïl Pletnev, Matthias Goerne is sure to transport us.
