As part of the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier Despite appearances, America may be the thread running through this concert: Mahler was conductor in New York from 1908 to 1911, Tchaïkovski conducted the inaugural concert at Carnegie Hall, Ives was born in Connecticut… and Roderick Cox, music director of the Orchestre national de Montpellier, not far from Atlanta in Georgia. Cox offers us a three-part program opening with The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives, a work as enigmatic as its title. Jamie Barton (also born in Georgia!) will sing the Rückert Lieder, a collection that includes the sublime piece “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen.” And it will all conclude with Tchaïkovski’s final symphony: Pathétique, certainly, but with a third movement of the most invigorating energy!
