As part of the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier After Matthias Goerne, on July 13, in Le Voyage d’hiver, it is Raphaël Pichon’s turn to take us into the world of the Wanderer, the wandering traveler encountered in many pages of German Romanticism. A traveler who, of course, loses his way in the night and in his dreams (Nacht und Träume), encounters his double (the Doppelgänger), and realizes that death is near, the one awaiting him in the depths of Tartarus. As you will have understood, Raphaël Pichon and his ensemble Pygmalion have made Schubert their guide through this journey, whether through works by Schubert himself (the famous “Unfinished” Symphony) or arrangements by Liszt and Reger. Siegfried Idyll, composed by Wagner to mark the birth of his son, nevertheless signals the return to light before Brahms’s First Symphony brings this program to a close in an apotheosis of joy and will.
