As part of the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier, his whole life seems like a novel: first, the triumphant success of the 1960s, when his quartet swept the hippie audiences of the great rock stages into a Coltrane-like fever, then the long retreat of the 1970s, and finally the spectacular comeback from the 1980s onward… Now in his eighties, he still keeps the flame alive with the same fervor, surrounded by elite musicians who are often not half his age. Keith Jarrett, Michel Petrucciani, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran: over the years, the greatest pianists have followed one another by his side, a torch now brilliantly taken up by Gerald Clayton. Rounded out by the excellent Harish Raghavan and Kweku Sumbry, this new quartet embodies a certain idea of jazz all on its own, between the memory of tradition and the celebration of the present moment.
