The archives reveal their secrets for the Heritage Days! To mark the European Heritage Days, the Archives de Montpellier will open their doors to the public on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is an opportunity to explore, free of charge, behind the scenes of a place that is usually out of the public eye. Free and open to everyone, the event will highlight the two themes of this year's edition: Heritage at Risk and photographic heritage. Throughout the day, visitors can explore the reading room independently to learn about document restoration work and take guided tours of the usually closed storage areas to discover how documents are preserved behind the scenes. A highlight of the day will be the exceptional presentation of the 13th-century manuscript Le Petit Thalamus, an iconic piece of Montpellier's heritage. The day will give the Archives team an opportunity to raise public awareness about the challenges involved in conserving these fragile documents. Restoring, preserving, and also reimagining how they are used: these are just some of the challenges involved in keeping this heritage, threatened by the passage of time, alive.
