As part of Voyage à Nantes, L’école des Beaux-Arts is presenting two major focuses of its institution this summer: art research and the work of teachers and artists. Since 2024, the art research project "L’Océan comme méthode", led at école des beaux-arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire, has invited us to renew our attention, sensitivities, representations, imaginations, and practices regarding the ocean. From the cities of Saint-Nazaire, Nantes, Lorient, Lisbonne, and Salvador in Brazil, students are exploring multiple past and present activities: trade and the movement of humans or plants, industries, energy, military and scientific hubs, and tourism. This reflection leads us to rethink how we inhabit the Earth and to decolonize the ocean. The exhibition presents student works in the Open School gallery and, in the showroom, a personal installation by artist and teacher Euridice Zaituna Kala, with a screening of her film made in Salvador de Bahia, "Roda dos Encantados / For Those Who Have No Language but Sounds". It explores the history of quilombos, territories of refuge and resistance created in Brazil by enslaved African people who had escaped and by Indigenous communities.
