Fusées draws inspiration from people who, consumed by their passion, will stop at nothing to possess the universe... In Jeanne Candel’s musical theatre, two men drift through the cosmos: one gives in to melancholy, while the other revels in his power. This contrast gives rise to a comic duo. A woman moves between them, carrying different voices—scientists, children fascinated by space, the spacecraft’s computer. Conceived as a poetic, farcical fable, Fusées explores our obsession with venturing into space. With no screens or technology, the show instead embraces theatre’s handcrafted tricks, a few props, the actors’ bodies and a “box of poetry.” The music unfolds in zero gravity: an upside-down piano, popular songs, and classical and melancholy melodies combine to create a strange “ghost music.” With humour and tenderness, the director and her team remind us that theatre remains that precious place where poetry exists and retains its full evocative power in the face of our sometimes fatal attraction to the farthest reaches of space.
