In connection with the temporary exhibition “Motherhood: Archaeology of the Maternal Figure” at the Chronographe, this conference held at Cosmopolis invites attendees to explore the material culture of very young children in Roman Gaul through objects unearthed in their graves. Feeding bottles, tableware, amulets, coins and animal offerings shed light on daily life, care, beliefs and the place given to young children in ancient societies. These discoveries provide a better understanding of the first years of life and the place of this age group in Roman societies. Speaker: Mélissa Tirel, PhD in Roman Archaeology and associate researcher at CReAAH (UMR 6566). This conference is part of the 2026 edition of Décryptages, “Childhood(s): Growing Up Somewhere,” presented by Cosmopolis. Full program: https://cosmopolis.nantes.fr/evenements/decryptages-enfances
