Léon de Saint-Pé, a writer and member of the Académie Française, is chained up by his wife Ada for impregnating the maid. While awaiting trial, he is forced to engage in daily self-criticism. His lawyer, Lebelluc, who voluntarily castrated himself out of ambition, argues his case during a turbulent trial in which every member of the Saint-Pé family and all their staff testify before an uncompromising judge.
