On the night of August 23 to 24, 1572, 3,000 Protestants were murdered in the streets of Paris by the king’s men. This was the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre, one of the best-known and bloodiest episodes of the Wars of Religion.
On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of this tragic event, Sylvain will bring this dark page of our history back to life. As we stroll from one bank to the other, we will explore this religious movement and the intolerance that followed its introduction in France, as well as the rites and traditions connected to this often little-known community. We will discuss the major figures linked to the Reformation (Bernard Palissy, Ambroise Paré, l’amiral de Coligny…) and the places they frequented, from the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, a cultural hub of Protestantism, to the “ La petite Genève ” district, a Protestant stronghold in the time of Jean Calvin, where the house that hosted the first Protestant baptism is still clearly visible. We will recall the first martyrs of Protestantism: the printers accused of printing and publishing books tainted with heresy. Our journey will take us to the église Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois, where the bells gave the signal for the massacre, passing by the Louvre, where we will bring Henri IV, la reine Margot and the other protagonists back to life, before ending at the temple de l’Oratoire.
