Designed for beginners fascinated by the art of writing, these introductory workshops teach the basic techniques of various styles while offering an exploration of the fundamental aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy. Each workshop invites us to immerse ourselves in art, culture, and philosophy, and to embark on a journey of self-discovery.
To practice calligraphy is to write one's authentic stroke. The concepts that “a person's characters resemble the person” ( zi ru qi ren 字如其人) and “a person grows old together with their writing” ( ren shu ju lao 人書俱老) run through the calligrapher's entire learning process and have shaped the history of Chinese calligraphy for millennia. This workshop explores the virtues of calligraphy: writing mindfully, confidently, and with inner strength through the art of the brush.
