For the European Archaeology Days, the musée des Plans-Reliefs is offering a free program with guided tours and a family workshop.
GUIDED TOUR “Archaeology in Relief” - June 13 and 14 Follow the guide and discover the world’s only collection of plans-reliefs: historic scale models of fortified sites, created between the reigns of Louis XIV and Napoléon III. From Mont Saint-Michel to Toulon, via Bayonne and île de Ré, visitors will see how these very distinctive objects have been used (and are still used!) as archaeological tools and historical records of how cities have evolved. DATES AND TIMES: Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Free guided tour with an admission ticket (to be purchased on site on the day of the visit or online through the musée de l'Armée ticket office). Duration: 45 min. No registration required. Meet on the day at the museum reception desk, on the 4th floor of the cour de l'Hôtel des Invalides (access via the aile Orient). - > FAMILY WORKSHOP “In the Time of Fortified Castles” (ages 6-12) After discovering the museum and taking a closer look at the model of Mont Saint-Michel and its fortifications, head to the workshop to build a small scale model of an entrance gatehouse, complete with towers, crenellations, machicolations, a portcullis... Everything children need to become experts in medieval fortifications! The apprentice model makers will then leave with their creation. DATES AND TIMES: Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. Duration: about 1 hr 45 min. Free workshop.
