The exhibition “The Fabric of Dreams” reinterprets the concept of textile art through works by artists associated with art brut, outsider art, and Surrealism. It brings together bold and poetic textile creations, often made from modest and recycled materials. The project is the result of a collaboration between the Centre international du surréalisme et de la Citoyenneté mondiale in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and the Halle Saint Pierre, reflecting their shared commitment to promoting a responsible approach to exhibitions.
By exploring a material rarely used by art brut and Surrealist artists, we discover the unique relationship this medium develops with creativity when it becomes a space for exploration and experimentation. Its uses in clothing, decoration, and artistic creation are reinvented to form a true vocabulary of the imagination. Historically associated with furnishings and domestic practices, textiles have emerged as a means of artistic reclamation and an embodiment of cultural and community identity. The medium challenges gender roles, the boundaries between art and craft, and the status of textile artifacts in relation to ornament, text, and architecture, ultimately becoming a favored vehicle for poetic escape. The exhibition The Fabric of Dreams brings together 36 artists who explore the shifting boundaries of textiles, where traditional craftsmanship merges with artistic experimentation. Whether drawing on the age-old techniques of weaving, embroidery, tapestry, lacework, macramé, knitting, or sewing, they use them in innovative, distinctive, or subversive ways. Natural, synthetic, raw, or recycled, these inspiring materials transform textiles into surfaces, volumes, landscapes, or bodies. From suspended installations to painted textiles, sculptural fabrics to wall hangings, and minimalism to intricate detail, each work challenges our relationship with material, time, and memory. Whether carrying intimate histories or collective narratives, thread serves here as a language of feeling. Textiles thus become a medium of resistance, emotion, and transmission.
