The dream of performing “The Cherry Orchard” in spring and becoming part of the landscape is the challenge that Aurélie Van Den Daele, a Cartoucherie regular, decided to take on by diving into Tchekhov’s final play, published in 1904.
Like the doctor-author, Aurélie Van Den Daele wants, almost imperceptibly, to examine souls with a scalpel, whether the wounds of the former moujik Lopakhine or the never-dried tears of Lioubov, this grieving, penniless woman, utterly out of step with a world that is trembling. What does this story of memory and class struggle tell us today? To redeem our past and begin to live, will we have to liquidate the cherry orchard? That is the whole question. To translate onto the stage these life impulses and the movement of these desperate bodies that fling themselves against one another and then collapse, Aurélie Van Den Daele brings together a large troupe of ten actors who place us at a turning point, on the verge of tears and laughter. Can we say goodbye to this story in order to build another one? This new Cherry Orchard will try to push back the walls, inviting the audience to a great celebration, a rite of passage, to be experienced together indoors and outdoors.
