In a society that never stops racing at full speed, bodies cross paths, brush against each other, jostle. Movements follow one after another, tension quickens, and the performers in this pulsing fresco created by Rachid Ouramdane in 2015 keep vibrating in a continuous circulation.
With Tenir le temps, created in 2015, Rachid Ouramdane presents a choreographic piece for 16 dancers, restaged 11 years later for the Ballet de l’Opéra de Tunis, focused on the question of the group, collective movement, and synchronization. In an almost abstract form, the choreographer explores the dynamics of crowds and the way individuals coexist in a shared space, between harmony and tension. The stage becomes a place for experimenting with living together, where bodies, in constant motion, seem to seek a fragile balance between unison and disorder. Repetition, shifts, fleeting or insistent interactions create a continuous, hypnotic flow, where every gesture seems to answer a quiet urgency: to hold on, together, despite the dissonances. Without an explicit narrative, Tenir le temps reads as a metaphor for the contemporary world, where individuals must constantly adjust, cross paths, brush against one another, and sometimes ignore one another. Jean-Baptiste Julien’s ever-present, pulsing electronic music acts as an underground force that structures the movements and triggers a collective trance. Here, Rachid Ouramdane creates a highly structured work, with geometric choreographic motifs that nevertheless allow each performer’s sensitivity to surface. The dancers, both anonymous and singular, form a living material in perpetual transformation. They reveal a world where fragility is constant, but where beauty emerges from shared movement. Tenir le temps is a captivating, almost meditative piece that questions our relationship to the collective, to temporality, and to the way we inhabit the world together. A suspended moment, where dance becomes a universal language of resistance and connection.
