The boldest flutist in French jazz takes you into an unprecedented musical trance with his close-knit quartet. Groove, freedom, improvisation: an immersive experience you absolutely have to live!
A flutist with wildly singular ideas, Magic Malik has been forging his own path for more than twenty years, somewhere between shifting groove, unexpected harmonies, and sonic exploration. With his Quartet XP – XP for Experience, of course – he continues to dig into music made in freedom, begun with his Orchestra, carried forward by the Fanfare XP, and nourished by rich collaborations in today’s jazz scene. Trained at the Conservatoire de Marseille, Malik loves to shake up conventions: he writes, improvises, layers rhythms, and twists sounds. His flute speaks, sings, breathes, and sometimes cries out. A living, vibrant style that makes him a truly distinctive musician, whom Télérama calls the “best flutist in French jazz.” Alongside him are three free spirits: Maïlys Maronne on piano, Jean-Luc Lehr on bass, and Vincent Sauve on drums. Together, they invent music on a human scale: demanding, generous, and full of momentum. In 2024, Malik also released Jazz Association : Le Baiser Salé Live, an album captured in the heat of the moment at the Paris club. A blazing record, poised between rhythmic tension and high-wire improvisation, praised for its freshness and freedom. And for the 2025-2026 season, the quartet takes up residency at Baiser Salé twice a month. A regular rendezvous with music in motion, searching, transforming, and shared in the moment. Like a breath you follow with your eyes closed.
