From April 8 through September 6, 2026, the Musée national Picasso-Paris will present a groundbreaking virtual reality experience devoted to the masterpiece Guernica.
The Metamorphoses of Guernica offers an unprecedented journey into the heart of one of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century. This virtual reality experience traces the history of Pablo Picasso’s monumental painting, from its commission for the 1937 International Exposition in Paris to its status as an iconic symbol of peace. The experience invites viewers to move through a series of defining moments and places: the Spanish Republican Pavilion, where the work was first unveiled to the public; the ruins of the Basque town of Gernika after the bombing that inspired the painting; the Grands-Augustins studio in Paris, where the work was created; and finally, the painting’s various journeys before its permanent installation at the Reina Sofía museum in Madrid. The story is told through the voices of two key witnesses: writer Juan Larrea, a member of the Spanish Republican delegation, and Dora Maar, a surrealist artist and Picasso’s partner, whose antifascist activism played a decisive role in the creation of this political work and who documented its development through a series of photographs. At the intersection of art history and sensory immersion, The Metamorphoses of Guernica offers a new way to understand the history of this universally significant work, in dialogue with the collections of the Musée national Picasso-Paris. These collections provide an overview of Picasso’s entire body of work and include preliminary studies, archival documents, and a collection of works closely connected to the creation of Guernica. “The Musée national Picasso-Paris wanted to complement visits to its collections with a VR film presenting Guernica (1937), one of Picasso’s major works. This iconic painting, which embodies his opposition to the Franco regime and is an essential 20th-century history painting, marks a pivotal stage in his career. It was important to highlight it through VR technology within the world’s largest public collection of works by Picasso. Drawing on archival materials, the writing of director Nicolas Thépot (Lucid Realities), and the museum’s scholarly guidance, this immersive experience explores the historical context, complex genesis, and far-reaching reception of this masterpiece, now housed at the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid,” Cécile Debray, President of the Musée national Picasso-Paris. Presented in the auditorium of the hôtel Salé, this immersive experience also echoes the third-floor galleries devoted to Picasso during World War II and to the works he created in the late 1930s and during the Occupation.
