The petites mains of fashion. A deep dive into the heart of Parisian couture houses, 1880-1945
PLEASE NOTE THE DATE HAS BEEN MOVED TO THURSDAY, JUNE 11 at 7 p.m. Jeanne Lanvin, Madeleine Vionnet, Gabrielle Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Sonia Rykiel, Nina Ricci… Many women have been (and still are) part of the fashion industry since made-to-measure couture emerged at the end of the 19th century. While history has remembered only the “great” names of Chanel, Lanvin, Schiaparelli, other women worked in their shadow: the petites mains, also known as midinettes. Less visible in the media, they are nevertheless the ones who keep couture alive. At the crossroads of social, economic, and cultural history, this talk will offer a comparative portrait of these women in couture. With Sophie Kurkdjian, Assistant Professor, AUP, historian, associate researcher, exhibition curator.
