Lecture by Mathilde Larrère on the fashion for crinoline dresses, a frame of flexible steel hoops that gave volume to dresses from the 1850s to the 1870s.

The library invites you to explore the fashion for voluminous clothing under the Second Empire through the phenomenon of crinolinomania. At the time, this fashion was mocked by men, who considered it too cumbersome. However, Mathilde Larrère’s recent research on crinoline dresses invites us to reconsider this clothing phenomenon. Because this skirt also helped women assert themselves! The crinoline: an instrument of emancipation? How were crinoline petticoats made? Mathilde Larrère, French historian, lecturer at Université Paris Est Marne-la-Vallée and a recognized specialist in social and revolutionary movements, will answer these questions. Her research focuses on the history of citizenship, relations between citizens and the State, the history of law enforcement, and more specifically the revolution of 1830. She is also a member of the Comité d’histoire de la Ville de Paris.
