Political mobilizations and social struggles in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s.
In Japan, the 1960s and 1970s were marked by intense social struggles and very large-scale mobilizations. The demonstration of June 18, 1960 against the renewal of the Japanese-U.S. security treaty brought together some 330,000 people in front of the Diet. This conference by Nicolas Pinet (sociologist and lecturer in Japanese studies at université d’Aix-Marseille) will seek to describe these varied mobilizations and social movements, analyze their dynamics, and identify the reasons for their decline during the 1970s. Speaker: - Nicolas Pinet, sociologist and lecturer in Japanese studies at université d’Aix-Marseille. He conducts research on working-class neighborhoods, social movements, and documentary cinema in contemporary Japan. He was also a Japanese studies fellow (researcher, long term) of the Fondation du Japon for 2012. Photo: ©Kazuo Kitai, Student, Barricades series, Tokyo, 1968
