The Concertgebouw Orchestra performs with Santtu-Matias Rouvali, a conductor still relatively unknown to the wider French public and considered the rising star of Finland’s prestigious conducting tradition.
Thanks to its well-established tradition and rigorous training, Finland is a true breeding ground for conductors on the international stage—Parisians are familiar with Klaus Mäkelä, Mikko Franck and Esa-Pekka Salonen, for example. Principal conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali has also been collaborating with the Concertgebouw Orchestra since 2020, and their performances together regularly receive critical acclaim. Rouvali conducts Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony and is joined for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor,” by another Nordic artist, Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. His recordings of Bach and Philip Glass have demonstrated his ability to bring out the best in very different repertoires.
