Under the musical direction of Klaus Mäkelä and Olha Dondyk, two great spiritual works come together in the closing concert of the Orchestre de Paris Summer Academy.
For this third session of the Summer Academy, forty-five young musicians from around the world are enjoying an intensive orchestral experience, playing side by side with musicians from the Orchestre de Paris. Organized in two parts (the Summer Academy, followed by the Studio Academy in the spring), the Academy has established itself in the field of advanced music education with its original model of immersive training. Each session, the Summer Academy’s closing concert offers an opportunity to discover the new generation of orchestral musicians. Between metaphysical torment and healing grace, the two works in this “wordless” program explore the human condition, from the alienating power of chaos to the peaceful defiance of prayer. Monumental in scale and portraying the individual’s struggle against brutality, barbarism, and every form of alienation, the “Liturgique” (1946) is both the most expansive and best known of Arthur Honegger’s symphonies. Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony “With Organ” (1886) is equally liturgical, offering a masterful display of compositional skill. With its sweeping architectural chords and radiant stained-glass hues, the organ appears in only two of the four movements—not as a soloist, but as a tonal color that lends the work its solemn spirituality.
