À propos

Raymond Murray Schafer’s “soundscapes” and Veljo Tormis’s shamanic incantation Raua needmine, performed by the a cappella choir Les Métaboles and its conductor Léo Warynski.

A central figure in contemporary music in Canada, Raymond Murray Schafer is renowned for his experimental approach to composition and his ecological thinking, notably reflected in his book L e Paysage sonore : le monde comme musique, published in 1977. The composer explains that his vocal music seeks to establish a spiritual relationship with the environment. The Magic Songs, in particular, aim to “restore aspects of nature that have been neglected or destroyed by humanity.” Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, who was particularly prolific in the field of choral music, blends ancient Finnish shamanic traditions with modern references in his work Raua needmine, which questions the use of natural iron for warfare.
