Winner of a Grammy in 2024, Roomful of Teeth pushes the boundaries of the voice through commissions and experiments with new technologies. Two cycles commissioned from Korean-American Peter S. Shin and New Yorker Gabriel Kahane demonstrate this perfectly.
Inspired by pioneering Korean-American visual artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Peter S. Shin’s Bits Torn From Words harnesses Roomful of Teeth’s vocal eclecticism for a dizzying exploration of anxiety disorders and their physiological and psychological repercussions—even dissecting the foundations of the Korean language. Gabriel Kahane, meanwhile, draws on his own experience as a singer-songwriter to turn Elevator Songs into a genuine anthology of melodies showcasing the distinctive qualities of the ensemble’s eight voices. He explored those voices, both individually and together, through a series of vocal laboratory workshops. The result is a portrait filled with admiration and challenges… Performers Roomful of Teeth Gabriel Kahane
