What do Janequin, Brassens, Rameau, Luis Mariano and Les Frères Jacques have in common? Animals, whose songs and behavior, set to music in songs, operas and instrumental pieces, inspire a joyful carnival for Ensemble Virêvolte.
The collective, led by soprano Aurore Bucher, enjoys bringing together different perspectives, creative partnerships and arrangements in hybrid musical productions—while fully embracing the joy of celebrating laughter and color. Spanning three hundred years of musical history does not faze them: a taste for risk and the call of dreams are also hallmarks of their work. Bêtes de scène showcases their virtuosity in combining singing, music, dance and disguise on stage with both seriousness and freedom, boldness and vulnerability. Described by Sol Espeche as an “invitation to explore our animal nature in a space where art, celebration, emotion and thought mingle without hierarchy,” this unusual bestiary takes on the form and tone of an exuberantly offbeat operatic cabaret. Preceded by one or more rehearsals, the participatory concerts invite audience members to take an active role in the performance from their seats. They accompany the artists on stage by singing or performing excerpts from works prepared in advance. Rehearsals for participating audience members will take place at the following times: Sunday, September 27, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. You must have a participatory-category ticket to attend the rehearsal.
