As part of Marc Bloch’s induction into the Panthéon
In February 2026, the Minister of Culture is organizing a ceremony to return one of Marc Bloch’s books, looted during the Second World War, to his heirs. The work was part of the famous historian’s library, a collection of thousands of volumes of exceptional quality. Appointed professor at the Sorbonne in 1938, Marc Bloch was subjected to antisemitic persecution from 1940 onward, when he was removed from his position and from the civil service. A year later, the Paris apartment he rented with his wife Simonne Vidal was requisitioned by the occupying forces, and his entire library was removed and dispersed in Germany. With Matis Bloch , great-grandson of Marc Bloch, Eric Le Bourhis , historian and lecturer at Inalco, and David Zivie , head of the mission for the research and restitution of cultural property looted between 1933 and 1945 at the Ministry of Culture. Hosted by Annette Becker , historian and professor emerita at université Paris Nanterre. Book
