How can Simone Veil be approached through a lens other than the now familiar one of the stateswoman? How can the innocence of a childhood in Nice, brutally interrupted by the Occupation and deportation, be brought back to life? The exhibition Simone Veil. Mes sœurs et moi, conceived by filmmaker and photographer David Teboul, seeks to bring out the intimate story of the Jacob family. Through a collection of documents — correspondence, photographs, interviews — visitors discover the deep bond that united Madeleine (Milou), Denise and Simone before, during and after the war. It is an intimate dimension that is rarely highlighted. The archives on display allow us to read and hear the words and voices of the Jacob sisters, who tell us about their childhood in Nice, Denise's involvement in the Resistance, the arrest of Simone, Milou and their mother Yvonne in spring 1944, deportation, separations, losses, and then the postwar years, up to Madeleine's death in 1952. Particular attention is given to their younger brother Jean, a budding photographer, with several of his images exhibited after long remaining within the family circle. Jean Jacob was deported with his father in 1944 on convoy 73. A family story both tender and tragic, one that connects with History itself and bears witness to the fate of the Jews of France. Book
