À propos

For Nuit Blanche, Turpentine is presenting an original program around the launch of the twentieth issue of the fanzine, which coincides with the twentieth anniversary of MABA. New paintings by Jean-Luc Blanc, based on images found in one of the books in the Smith-Lesouëf library, will be shown in dialogue with those of Jean-Jacques Henner (1829– 1905). The reading room will host a new animated film by Jonathan Martin, whose action takes place in the library. And a giant inflatable effigy of a plush firefly, designed by Mimosa Echard, will be hidden in the park. Turpentine is a fanzine published since 2013 by Jean-Luc Blanc, Mimosa Echard, Jonathan Martin, and their successive guests. Borrowing the English name for essence of turpentine, Turpentine offers a metaphor for the dissolution of ego and mental barriers and the invigorating effects of free association. The invited artists, of quite different ages and backgrounds, are brought together by currents of friendship and companionship around a shared body of work. Turpentine often represents a detour within the artists’ respective practices.
