An exhibition in an unusual setting that artist Gerardo Cleto frequented during his residency at the espace culturel Utrillo de Saint-Denis
As part of the Ville de Saint-Denis artistic residency "Reinvention and Transformation of Rituals" with the Espace culturel Maurice Utrillo in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, artist Gerardo Cleto conducted research into the area's everyday practices. Part of this research took shape as the installation "Nouvelle Guinguette". However, during the months he spent there, the artist did not work only in spaces dedicated to artistic production: he also built relationships of trust in informal moments – especially during his breaks at the Café du Marché, a PMU located opposite the Espace Utrillo. It was there that an obvious practice emerged: sports betting, a minor ritual that, as Seligman suggests, creates pockets of order and safety within a fragmented reality. In agreement with the owner, the artist transformed losing betting slips into small origamis while talking with the other customers. The result is on display on June 6 for Nuit Blanche inside the Café du Marché itself: the collection of origamis returned to the public as a single sculpture.
