Music of the past, music of today: the Chœur de chambre de l’Île-de-France, joined for the occasion by a string quintet, invites you on an artistic journey through memory.
Drawn from the cycle “Membra Jesu Nostri”, the two Baroque cantatas “Ad manus” and “Ad latus” by Buxtehude fervently address the hands and side of Christ on the cross. Composed as a mirror to the first cantata, “Ad manus”, the magnificent “To the hands” by the young American composer Caroline Shaw enters into dialogue with its ancient model while questioning the present, in search of refuge and consolation. Benjamin Britten’s brief “Deus in adjutorium” seems to distill several centuries of English choral music into just a few minutes, while the brilliant “Unicornis captivatur” by the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo brings a medieval fantastical bestiary back to life through a 15th-century text and polyphony that pays tribute to the Italian Renaissance. Finally, the two pieces by the Estonian Veljo Tormis movingly evoke the memory of a summer celebration and the nostalgic call of a distant home. Come share with us a musical moment filled with beautiful emotions.
