First retrospective in France dedicated to Noa Eshkol (1924-2007)

Dance and Compositions is the first retrospective dedicated to Noa Eshkol (1924-2007) in France. It traces the diversity of her work – choreographic compositions, research into movement notation, and textile works – and presents video installations by Yael Bartana and Sharon Lockhart, two contemporary artists inspired by the choreographer. A pioneer of dance in Israel, as well as a prolific textile artist, she developed, in the 1950s, a revolutionary system of movement notation with the dual aim of creation and transmission. In 1954, she founded the Chamber Dance Group to perform dance compositions without music, accompanied only by the sound of a metronome, focusing on what matters most: the body, space, and time. In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, she declared that “it was no longer time to dance.” This opened a new chapter in her work, with the creation of Wall Carpets, large textile compositions oscillating between still life, landscape, and abstraction, which would make her one of the most important textile artists of the 20th century. A performance - free and by reservation - will take place at 6 p.m. at the Ménagerie de Verre (12 Rue Léchevin, 75011). Curated by Pascale Samuel, with Dorota Sniezek. In partnership with La Ménagerie de Verre. This exhibition received support from the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles d’Île-de-France – ministère de la Culture, Artis, the fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah, the fondation Pro mahJ, the fondation Feldstein sous égide de la fondation du Judaïsme français, the fondation Rothschild, and the Délégation interministérielle à la lutte contre le racisme, l’antisémitisme et la haine anti-LGBT.
