JOANA VASCONCELOS / Cœur de Paris

It’s a matter of the heart. Here, we welcome people with heart; the artwork conveys the spirit of our neighborhood: lively and welcoming, despite its difficulties.

Installation. Residents and community organization members, gathered around the socio-cultural center la Maison Bleue Porte Montmartre, asked the artist to create a universal symbol for this “world” neighborhood. In response to the commissioners’ expectations, the artist designed a work that highlights the lively atmosphere of its surroundings while sending a joyful message of welcome. 3,800 hand-painted azulejos cover this flamboyant heart, whose rotating and luminous movement reinforces its role as a landmark in the middle of the vast intersection. The work symbolizes the identity of the porte de Clignancourt neighborhood as a place of convergence, a cardinal point of the Paris of today and tomorrow. Cœur de Paris is the first work by this major artist to be permanently installed in Parisian public space. Cœur de Paris - 2018 / Hand-painted Azulejos Viúva Lamego, Vista Alegre glass cabochons, fiber optics, LED projectors, gearmotor, fiberglass, powder-coated galvanized steel, aluminum, power supply / Dimensions: 1100 x 400 x 200 cm JOANA VASCONCELOS (Born in Paris in 1971, lives and works in Lisbonne) Born in Paris in 1971 but trained in Lisbonne, Joana Vasconcelos draws on traditional Portuguese culture to create a visual poetry in which her roots embrace the modernity of pop culture. She playfully engages with everyday objects in sculptural form, blurring the boundaries between craft and industry, tradition and modernity, popular culture and high culture. Her work takes the form of sculptures and installations, creating a vivid play of colors and textures, especially through the use of embroidery. She also expresses herself through photography, video, and performance to conceptually disrupt everyday routines, particularly those related to the status of women. Work created as part of the T3 Nord artistic program, according to the protocol of the “Nouveaux commanditaires de la Fondation de France” initiative
