On November 8, 1939, Georg Elser, a German carpenter with communist sympathies, plants a bomb in the Bürgerbräukeller beer hall in Munich intending to assassinate Adolf Hitler. But Hitler leaves the venue earlier than expected, just minutes before the explosion, and the attack fails. Quickly arrested, Elser is subjected to interrogation and torture by the Gestapo, which tries to force him to name supposed accomplices. Yet he belongs to no party and acted alone.
