The exhibition invites visitors to discover the work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1773-1822), also known as E. T. A. Hoffmann, from a new perspective.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover the work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1773-1822), also known as E. T. A. Hoffmann, from a new perspective. He was one of the most important writers and artists of German Romanticism and is considered the founder of fantastic realism. His influence extends to every art form: his stories continue to inspire writers, filmmakers, and musicians to this day. In collaboration with éditions du Typhon, the Maison Heinrich Heine presents a selection of 18 black-and-white illustrations by artist and author Tristan Bonnemain, taken from his book “Dans la nuit d’E. T. A. Hoffmann”. This book contains five new translations of nocturnal tales by the German author, along with richly detailed drawings that offer a contemporary look at his narrative worlds. The exhibition is rounded out by biographical panels on E. T. A. Hoffmann and his influence on art, literature, and music, as well as general information about the contributors to the book project. The exhibition is on view from June 15 to 29, 2026, in the entrance hall.
