“Après moi, le déluge” resonates like a motto that every generation seems to embody: the persistent belief that the world will end with it. Dance then becomes a way to defy this grim fate, bringing joy in the face of the cynicism of a society buckling under the weight of crises. But beware the monsters haunting our humanity and our lives.
Après moi, le déluge is the third production created for the prestigious Ballet national de Marseille, which (LA)HORDE has directed since 2019. This sweeping fresco brings together some fifteen performers caught up in a choreographic and musical whirlwind. You know the expression “move heaven and earth”? And “After us, the deluge”? That one too? That is what happens here. The dancers dig into the ground and turn it upside down, transforming the floor into the ceiling. A new space emerges, filled with apocalyptic imagery. Through a single question, the piece sounds the alarm: what should we do when our world begins to falter? Après moi, le déluge forms part of (LA)HORDE’s creative landscape, driven by a fascination with communities and every form of uprising—for example, the raves of Room with a View and the avatars in Age of Content. Here, (LA)HORDE focuses on the figure of the whistleblower, the hacker or the contemporary “monster.” With (LA)HORDE, it is impossible to remain quietly seated. Music plays just as important a role as movement. Set to an original score by Pierre Aviat, the piece is a love letter to every form of dance in which unity is strength. In the face of today’s gloom, Après moi, le déluge lifts us back up in a great shared surge of energy—together, all of us together.
