Created in 1983, Rosas danst Rosas propelled Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker onto the international stage and established the foundations of her choreographic language: a rigorous structure, everyday gestures, and a constant tension between restraint and abandon. The work emerged at a time when American postmodern dance was already exploring the role of ordinary movement and repetition. Built around the body’s three basic positions — lying down, sitting, and standing — it unfolds with relentless precision while generating unparalleled emotion. This tension between exactitude and vulnerability, discipline and sensuality, made Rosas danst Rosas a pivotal, radical work, often interpreted as a feminist manifesto. The choreography impresses with its shifts in intensity, tensions, and wild accelerations bordering on paroxysm. The four performers move through swaying motions, spirals, suspensions, and sudden reversals, as though swept up by forces — anger, desire, violence — that course through their bodies, with freedom as their vanishing point. The “maximalist” music by Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch, composed especially for the work, the film made in 1997, and the participatory platform Re:Rosas!, where hundreds of people learned and posted their own versions of its famous “chair dance,” have helped make this work timeless and almost universal.
