L'AiR Arts is pleased to invite you to spend an afternoon with writers Lillian Davies and Nina Strand. Join us on Saturday, June 13, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., for an exhibition, a meet-the-authors session, and a book launch starting at 3 p.m.
“Les Notes” series Nina Strand is currently working on a series of small books devoted to Generation X: “Notes sur la présence,” “Notes sur Paname,” and “Notes sur la politique.” In Notes sur la présence, the protagonist observes, meets, and photographs all kinds of people in order to explore how society, and we as individuals, perceive aging women. The text is accompanied by portraits of statues of queens, Les Reines de France et Femmes illustres, located in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. Notes sur Paname opens during the summer of the Paris Olympic Games and continues through to the tenth anniversary of the 2015 attacks. Through brief reflections accompanied by images of bistro terraces, this book explores the tangled feelings of love and belonging toward a city that is not one’s own. In Notes sur la Politique, Strand examines the leading role her parents played in communist activism from 1968 onward and compares it with her own generation’s ironic approach to the future, as well as how this shapes her daughter’s faith in what lies ahead. Posters featuring images and texts from these three projects will be on display. Many of the texts in Notes sur la Présence originated in correspondence with Lillian Davies and Catherine Taylor for Paragraphes. The paragraph: a distinct part of a written text, centered on an idea, clearly marked off on the page “Paragraphes begins as a friendship: shared admiration, a hint of desire, the urge to connect, to stay in touch, and perhaps one day to create something together. In times marked by violence, division, and overwhelming fear, Paragraphes proposes writing as a collective action, one that may well hold healing potential. Drawing on the simple freedom of a Fluxus score, Paragraphes is not limited to a single theme, subject, or style. Instead, it is bound to a form, a structure. And to an invitation to play. Paragraphes is about close observation, now often described as a radical act. In this collection of closely connected short texts, we look at one another as writers, while also confronting our own lives and the world around us. If there is not exactly hope, there is humanity in this shared project taking shape.” Lillian Davies, Nina Strand, Catherine TaylorPlaygrounds Press, 2026128 pages, 14.8 x 20 cm Illustrated in color with photographs by Nina Strand depicting works by artists including Vanessa Baird, Miriam Cahn, Nina Childress, Maira Kalman, and Sarah Lucas, among others.
