Through the lens of contemporary art and scientific data, the exhibition Aux origines examines one of the most powerful and persistent factors of discrimination in our society. "Origin," whether real or imagined, is a cause of daily exclusion and stigmatization. A reality often overlooked, yet it shapes collective and individual trajectories from childhood onwards.
Aux origines - Crossed Perspectives on Racism and Discrimination From June 5 to August 23, 2026 The exhibition Discrimination often stems from a simple glance. People of foreign origin and/or perceived as such bear the brunt of it. This "origin"—real, assumed, or imagined—is the source of persistent stereotypes that frequently shape life paths from an early age. Through the subversive gaze of contemporary artists—including the Chevalme sisters, Patrick Zachmann, Euridice Zaituna Kala, Hamedine Kane—and new data, the exhibition Aux origines invites us to trace back to the roots of these mechanisms of stigmatization and exclusion, questioning how perceptions are formed and perpetuated. Drawing on recent social science research, particularly the European project UNDETERRED * - UNintentional Discrimination dETEcted and Racism REveal and Deactivate - the exhibition highlights the structural, sometimes unconscious nature of discrimination. It does not overlook its concrete effects in everyday life, especially among young people. Access to education, employment, housing, or healthcare: all areas where this mechanism produces lasting inequalities. Echoing statistical data, works by contemporary artists testify to the sensitive side of these discriminations: fatigue, obstacles, but also forms of resistance and solidarity resulting from them are intimate, lasting, and often invisible effects. Aux origines is a way to invite everyone to question their own perceptions and envision a society free from these mechanisms of discrimination in daily life. * The UNDETERRED project aims to contribute to the fight against systemic discrimination faced by European youth (18-35 years old) in health, housing, education, and employment. Coordinated by the University of Bordeaux, it starts with empirical analysis of six cities – Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bordeaux, Bucharest, Lausanne, Quebec – to highlight how structural discrimination permeates public policies and the daily lives of young people.
