“An unusual doctrine of the body, judo and, after it, martial arts as a whole possess an absolute and fascinating otherness that makes the elsewhere of the East accessible. Because they provide an alternative to current educational models, they assert a cultural preference. They offer the experience of exoticism and propose another ideal of humanity and society. Outside the measurement of performance and Anglo-Saxon-inspired sports activities, martial arts assert their cultural specificity in places that embody a break. By leaving behind the gym and the coach’s instructions, those who aspire to bodily efficiency and wisdom have chosen the teachings of a Master within the ritualized setting of a dojo, the ‘hall where one studies the way.’”

Combining an explanation of principles with practical demonstrations, this lecture showcases the three martial disciplines that accompanied the introduction of martial arts in France: jujutsu, aikido, and kendo. The styles presented each use distinct techniques but pursue the same goal in transmitting the values of traditional budô, self-control, harmony, and ultimately nonviolence. They illustrate the decisive influence of the philosophy of Jigorô Kanô, the founder of judo. Event led by Michel Brousse (judo), with demonstrators: Serge Mairet, Yann Rouillé (aikido), Jean-Claude Girot (kendo), and Bertrand Amoussou (jujutsu).
