Carmen, a young actress, arrives in a talking circle with an urgent need: to tell the story of her journey, marked by disappointments in both love and theater. Through three Shakespearean heroines — Juliet ( Romeo and Juliet ), Helena ( A Midsummer Night’s Dream ) and Olivia ( Twelfth Night ) — she exorcises her love stories and her visceral desire to perform. The show blends classical scenes and improvisation, bringing the audience in as a partner in the game; an invitation to joy and liberation that makes Shakespeare accessible to everyone and reveals the striking modernity of his questions about love. Shakespeare Love examines Shakespeare’s female figures in the light of today’s romantic experiences: extreme passion, despair, desire beyond gender. How can we talk about love today? What new way of loving is possible? The situations Shakespeare’s heroines go through are universal. They question our romantic relationships as much in the Elizabethan era as today. “At fifteen, one of the first plays that made an impression on me was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed at the Théâtre de Verdure du Jardin Shakespeare. At the time, I found that open-air theater, surrounded by nature, incredible: the ideal setting to let this magical play by the English playwright resonate. I had the feeling the place had been imagined for the play.” Ana Lorvo “I have had a dream since I started theater. I grew up between Nice and the Nice hinterland in a village called Gars. That is where I developed a love for nature, wide open spaces, and the stars. One day I would like to create an open-air theater festival in my childhood village, and the Théâtre de Verdure would be the first step. When Ana asked me to help with her project Shakespeare Love, I immediately said yes because we had worked together for two years at the Conservatoire Régional de Paris. I had been her scene partner for auditions, and she had been a great help to me for a scene from Lucrèce Borgia by Victor Hugo. What I love about Ana is that she throws herself into every scene with great intensity.
