À propos

This story is about the meeting of Tubby and Nottubby, two strangers whom fate surprises one Christmas Eve, on the brink of despair. It is also the story of the extraordinary quest into which they will be thrust, very much against their will, from the banks of the Thames, in London, to beyond reality.

Deceived by their illusions but carried by the beauty of their dream, they will meet a skull, survive a storm, fall out, make up, sing to keep fear at bay, and defy death itself on the road to their rebirth… Haunted by the breath of Shakespeare, steeped in the marvelous madness of Laurel and Hardy, nourished by ancient myths, this show tells of the strength but also the fragility of friendship, love, and dreams, the last defenses against the cruelty of the world. “This celestial vault before which we stand in awe, We know it is only a kind of magic lantern; The sun is the lamp; the universe, the lantern; And we, the turning images.” Omar Khayyam. “To be or not to be. To be alive, or not to be. Everything begins with those six words, which seem to have echoed within us all since the beginning of the world: a shock, between the desire for life and the call of death as perceived when despair strikes, like a possible release. Shakespeare, then, in whom England is so magnificently steeped, where Sophie was born and lived. Shakespeare, whose language and imagination ran through and nourished every hour of the creative process. And then these two theatrical creatures, Tubby and Nottubby, born from an older project that had already brought them together on stage, at the heart of the Peloponnesian War. Fragile creatures, to whom fate gave a second life when a theater director wondered what they would be in the world as we know it today, urging us to invent their story… Who, then, are these two strangers -so vulnerable because they are sincere- in a world where predators reign with a smile? Who are Tubby and Nottubby, if not that part of ourselves that questions, in anguish, when faced with cynicism raised to a system: Can one survive if one refuses to be a throat-cutter? And if so: how?” Louis Fortier, Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, April 2011
