À propos

Sophie Lukacs, a Canadian of Hungarian origin based in Montréal, is one of the few women to play the kora. Trained in Bamako with Toumani Diabaté, she blends Manding tradition with contemporary song. Her album Bamako (2023) won the award for Best World Music Album. For this concert, she will be joined by three musicians for a musical journey between Bamako and Budapest, in several languages.

A Canadian originally from Budapest and based in Montréal, Sophie Lukacs is one of the few women in the world to master the kora, the iconic 21-string harp-lute of West Africa. After seven years of study in Bamako with master Toumani Diabaté, she developed a unique musical language that weaves together Manding tradition and contemporary song. Her album Bamako (Disques Nuits d’Afrique, 2023) earned her the Best World Music Album award at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards. She has performed on international stages, including Festival Saint-Louis Jazz (Sénégal), Africa Oyé (Liverpool), and Nuits d’Afrique (Montréal). For this concert at the Centre Culturel Canadien, Sophie Lukacs is joined by three exceptional musicians: Cheick Niang on guitar, Noel Mpiaza on percussion and vocals, and Laszlo Koos on bass. Together, they invite us on a sonic journey between Bamako and Budapest, between tradition and modernity, sung in French, English, Bambara, and Hungarian.
