"Le Chevalier d’Harmental, or how Alexandre Dumas weaves his plot and characters into grand History." A Causerie presented by the Société des Amis d'Alexandre Dumas.

Le Chevalier d’Harmental, published in 1841, is Alexandre Dumas’s first historical novel and his first collaboration with the young historian Auguste Maquet. He chose as its setting the Regency of the duc d’Orléans during the minority of Louis XV – a period he loved – and more specifically the deplorable conspiracy known as the Cellamare conspiracy, plotted by the duchesse du Maine, wife of the duc du Maine, son of Louis XIV and la Montespan, against the Regent and in favor of Philippe V d’Espagne. Let us discover together this delightful novel, in which everything that makes Dumas such a gifted storyteller is already present in seed form! Lecture led by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff, Vice-President of the Amis d’Alexandre Dumas in charge of Collections and a theater historian. The Causeries au coin du feu (or by candlelight!) initiated by the Amis de Dumas are free events, open to everyone upon registration, subject to availability. With the friendly support of the Maison Auguste Comte. Image: BNF – Collection Michel Hennin. Prints relating to the History of France – “The happy beginning of the reign of Louis XV”
