Ear Witness brings together Simon Spang-Hanssen, Mario Canonge, Linley Marthe and Adriano Tenorio in a free-spirited, multicultural contemporary jazz quartet blending composition, improvisation and collective creation.
With Ear Witness, Simon Spang-Hanssen leads a contemporary jazz quartet in which composition and improvisation continually challenge one another, with an open aesthetic shaped by his collaborations with figures such as John Tchicai and Michel Portal, balancing formal rigor with freedom of expression. On piano, Mario Canonge, whose journey has taken him from Martinique to Paris and to Ultramarine with Nguyên Lê, brings percussive playing and richly blended harmonies infused with jazz and Caribbean influences, making him a key figure on the French jazz scene. On bass, Linley Marthe, a former member of the Joe Zawinul Syndicate, is renowned for his power and virtuosity, with a dense, precise sound that is instantly recognizable in contemporary jazz fusion. On drums, Adriano Tenorio draws on his Brazilian heritage and extensive work across Europe, including collaborations with Mayra Andrade and Gregory Privat, delivering fluid, structurally grounded playing deeply rooted in rhythm and movement. Together, they create a taut, organic collective language in which each voice retains its identity while contributing to a cohesive whole, with previews of tracks from Simon Spang-Hanssen's forthcoming album Seconds Ago (out August 28, 2026) and a tribute to Félix Sabal-Lecco woven throughout.
