Built around Laurent Coulondre on organ and Arnaud Dolmen on drums, the septet The Getdown rolls out the red carpet for groove and agile melodies.
The two musicians have made their mark on the jazz scene over the past fifteen years, but had never played together until a ceremony where Laurent Coulondre and Arnaud Dolmen were invited to collaborate on a piece. The spark was lit, burning even brighter on an electrifying album and then on other stages, where The Getdown reinvented itself as a fluid collective with Caribbean music from the Antilles françaises and Cuba at the heart of the project. The Getdown will take to the Jazz à la Villette stage as a high-energy septet. The line-up includes Rolando Luna, one of the most brilliant Cuban pianists of his generation, and Mario Canonge, an outstanding figure in piano music from the Antilles. Joining the organ, keyboards, and drums are the talented saxophonist Ferdi, trumpeter Yasek Manzano, and promising flutist and singer Mélodie Spartacus. With pleasure as their only compass, no one is content to stay neatly in their lane: the keyboards deliver most of the melodic flair, yet also display a remarkable sense of rhythm—shaped by the legacy of Michel Petrucciani—while the drums play with the fluidity of the tempo to trace the melody’s contours as closely as possible.
