A Jazz à la Villette regular, GoGo Penguin brings the wonders of a sumptuous new album to the stage. On it, the English trio strikes a new balance between electronic and acoustic sounds, fresh sonic textures and radiant melodies.
For nearly a quarter of a century, GoGo Penguin has carved out a unique path through today’s jazz landscape, at the crossroads of electronic and repetitive music. After a period of personal and artistic rebuilding that gave rise to the deeply introspective Everything Is Going to Be OK in 2023, the Manchester trio has now rediscovered a sense of serenity and a taste for new horizons. This spirit radiates throughout Necessary Fictions, their seventh album, released in summer 2025 and patiently crafted in a studio transformed into a true laboratory. Chris Illingworth (piano), Nick Blacka (bass) and Jon Scott (drums) remain true to the group’s identity while venturing into new sonic textures, making greater use of modular synthesizers and featuring strings from Manchester Collective on two tracks. By orchestrating a dialogue between acoustic and electronic sounds, flowing melodies and inventive arrangements, GoGo Penguin opens a captivating new chapter in an undeniably impressive discography.
