Novelist, poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) left an indelible mark on the history of 20th-century popular music, with a discography full of classics deeply attuned to their time. Beginning with Pieces of a Man in 1972, his second album, which features the hit “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” Fluid soul and spoken word, politics and poetry come together brilliantly on this record, more than half of whose tracks were composed with producer, keyboardist and flautist Brian Jackson. Their collaboration flourished throughout the 1970s across some ten albums, where their groundbreaking blend of jazz, soul and blues paved the way for the rise of hip-hop. Today, Brian Jackson has joined forces with rap legend Yasiin Bey to revisit Gil Scott-Heron’s exceptional repertoire, highlighting the clear kinship between two artists who both cultivated a jazz sensibility and a political and social conscience within a multifaceted, incisive and free-spirited body of work.
