“In the shadows of my garden / I sowed beauty.” These lines by Anne Perrier could serve as the threshold to this program devoted to the ties between poetry and nature in vocal music. Perhaps it all begins there: not in a place, but in a gesture. Sowing. Listening. In Gardens of the World, each piece opens a different door, and yet everything intertwines: the tree and the bird, water and reflection, the flower and the wind, the dreamed-of island and departure.
From Sweden to the United States, via France and Portugal, several women composers from the turn of the 20th century – Marcelle de Manziarly, Berta Alves de Sousa, Charlotte Sohy, Laura Netzel and Amy Beach – found in poetry a privileged ground for writing for the voice. Almond trees in bloom, roses and butterflies, birdsong, fountains or summer twilights: the texts set to music trace a succession of landscapes where nature becomes image, memory or a space for contemplation. Thus, Gardens of the World offers less a stroll than a compass: an art of connection. Connecting languages, climates and eras; connecting popular song with learned poetry; connecting the intimate garden with the vastness of the world.
