Composed twenty-five years apart, the quartets by Valborg Aulin and Nancy Dalberg share the same gesture: taking their place within one of chamber music’s major forms. Trained between Stockholm, Copenhague and Paris, these two composers were part of the European musical exchanges of their time, while developing a deeply personal style.
At the end of the 19th century, Valborg Aulin was a recognized figure in Stockholm: her works were performed, published, and championed. Then she left the music scene and stopped composing, leaving behind, among other works, two quartets of remarkable ambition. In 1915, in Danemark, Nancy Dalberg took a bold gamble: devoting an entire concert to her music. Her quartet opened the evening, supported by her teacher Carl Nielsen. It was an experience she would describe as “a fairy tale,” hearing her notes come to life. Setting these two works side by side means bringing to light two ways of embodying the string quartet in Scandinavia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
